Primary Grant Focus
Project Gear Up leverages the collective expertise and influence of a broad collaboration of educator professional groups to support implementation of the Indiana College and Career Readiness Standards. Project members include the Indiana Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development, the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP), the Indiana Network of Independent Schools, and the Education Service Centers of Indiana. As a coalition, Project Gear Up aims to enhance and expand current professional development offerings by increasing connections and information sharing among network members, conducting a training of trainers on the new standards, and enhancing face-to-face trainings with video-based professional development.
Strategies for Supporting Common Core Success
Project Gear Up, in coordination with IASP and the education service centers, is the only organization directly supporting teachers and administrators to implement the Indiana College and Career Readiness Standards. To support its goals, Project Gear Up has created an e-newsletter that is distributed to over 9,000 educators in Indiana. The e-newsletter provides resources and information related to the state standards and publicizes opportunities for related professional development. Through Project Gear Up, English language arts/literacy and math workshops and professional development systems have been developed and implemented through the education service centers, reaching over 2,700 teachers. The project has also created a mapping system for reporting that provides a visual representation of how nine service center areas are providing direct support to educators, either through face-to-face meetings or video conferencing.
In order to share their expertise, member groups use existing networks of educators (for example, small learning communities within schools) and Indiana’s Learning Connections, a state department of education online resource that allows educators to collaborate and share information. The website, which provides student data, community discussions, online lesson planning and curriculum design, and resources, is being further developed to support Project Gear Up goals.
