National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has collaborated with the International Reading Association (IRA) and National Writing Project (NWP) to leverage its combined membership and existing multimedia strategies to create a robust online network that supports teacher collaboration and school leadership to implement Common Core State Standards (CCSS) across academic disciplines.
Strategies for Supporting Common Core Success
Focused on literacy teaching and learning, a consortium of organizations (NCTE, IRA, NWP) is collectively supporting teachers across content areas to implement CCSS and providing system leaders (of schools, networks of schools, and districts) tools for institutional CCSS implementation.
- Collectively, the three individual organizations house a wealth of CCSS resources, including online courses, instructional guides, teacher-created lessons, videos, webinars, and podcasts. These CCSS resources have been collected and combined in a joint effort to create ReadWriteThink, a website offering open-access multimedia resources, to support K-12 teachers across disciplines to implement CCSS-aligned literacy instruction.
- The Literacy in Learning Exchange is a free online resource designed to promote and support educator adoption of CCSS-aligned practices. Inquiry teams from participating schools, districts, or organizations interested in resources and tools for collaborative professional learning opportunities can utilize the site to:
- participate in online “practice exchanges,” where teachers share and improve materials using a consultancy protocol, or
- engage in cross-group conversations related to a problem of practice.
- Instructional leaders may access one of the many downloadable cases, models, vignettes, or tools to deepen their understanding of literacy teaching and learning and build teacher capacity for peer collaboration and planning of CCSS-aligned instruction.
- To reinforce the importance of addressing CCSS-aligned literacy instruction across academic content areas, the consortium has made presentations on disciplinary approaches to standards at national conventions. For example, the consortium has invited leaders of national math and science organizations to participate in the joint effort to support content area teachers in understanding and effectively implementing the literacy goals of CCSS.
